How long does the journey take?

The journey duration is approximately 8 hours for each direction (both outbound and return). Please refer to the Tonkin Legacy Itinerary for exact schedule details

Is Sapa town right at the train stop?

Sapa town is located approximately 38 km from Lao Cai station. For your comfort, we provide a dedicated transfer service through the scenic mountain route.

Does the train operate on public holidays?

Yes — Tonkin Heritage operates year-round, including Tet and major Vietnamese holidays, except on Lunar New Year’s Eve (30th of Tet), when trains on both Hanoi–Lao Cai routes pause service. See Available Dates.

Is it safe to travel by train?

Yes. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. How early should I arrive at the station?

We recommend arriving 45–60 minutes prior to departure, especially on weekends or public holidays. This allows you time for check-in and a relaxed boarding experience. To make the most of your wait, you are warmly invited to visit our Lounge, where you can unwind with fine beverages, light snacks, and a selection of delightful dishes before your journey begins.

What if there's an emergency?

Does the train make stops along the route?

Yes, our trains make several scheduled stops between Hanoi and Lao Cai. We operate two main services:

Express Service (SP7) – 6 stops, 7h 45min journey
Departs Hanoi: 22:40 → Arrives Lao Cai: 06:25
Key stops: Yen Bai (02:35), Bao Ha (04:36), Pho Lu (05:19)

Standard Service (SP3) – 11 stops, 7h 55min journey
Departs Hanoi: 22:00 → Arrives Lao Cai: 05:55
Additional stops include: Vinh Yen, Viet Tri, Phu Tho, Mau A

2. TICKETS & BOOKING
What’s included in my ticket?

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, advance booking is required as our seats often sell out. Book Your Journey.

How can I book tickets?

Tickets are available via our [Booking Page], hotline, at Hanoi Railway Station, or through WhatsApp/Zalo.

What payment options do you accept?

We accept online bank transfers, credit cards and cash (at our office)

When will I receive my ticket?

After completing payment, you will get an e-voucher by email. Use this to check in and print your boarding pass at the station.

Can I receive a VAT invoice?

Select ‘Request Invoice’ during checkout and enter your business information.

Can I cancel my booking in bad weather?

Cancellations are possible only in force majeure cases. Please review our [Terms & Conditions].

Can I change my cabin after booking?

Certainly. We’re happy to accommodate changes to your journey when availability permits. Please note that fare adjustments and modification fees may apply. Our guest services team can guide you through our flexible Booking Policy.

3. ONBOARD EXPERIENCE & POLICIES
Can I bring outside food/drink?

Yes, but please avoid spills; linen cleaning fees apply if damaged.

Are pets allowed?

No, we do not allow pets onboard.

Is smoking permitted?

No. All carriages are completely smoke-free.

Are parties or loud music permitted?

To ensure a refined and tranquil atmosphere for all our guests, portable speakers and loud activities are not permitted onboard. However, we would be delighted to arrange private celebrations and bespoke events through our dedicated Events page, where every detail is curated with elegance and care.

What if I miss my train?

Tickets are forfeited unless missed due to force majeure or company fault.

Do you accommodate children?

Children under 5 travel free if sharing with parents. Extra beds incur an additional charge.

Can pregnant travelers board the train?

Yes, if pregnancy is healthy without complications. Please consult your physician before traveling.

Are there interconnecting cabins?

There are no interconnecting cabins; however, upon request, we can arrange adjacent cabins within the same class for your convenience.

What documents do I need to board?

A valid ID and your e-voucher.

Is there Wi-Fi onboard?

Yes. Please note coverage may be limited in mountainous areas.

Which mobile provider works best in Lao Cai?

Viettel and Vinaphone have the strongest signals in the Lao Cai area.

Are there restrooms on board?

Yes, shared restrooms are regularly cleaned and well maintained.

Are food and drinks served on the train?

Which cabin type should I choose?

Grand Suite Queen: Spacious, private, most premium. Ideal for couples.

6. DESTINATION & VIETNAM TRAVEL
When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

North: Nov–Mar is dry and cool. South: Dry season from Dec–Apr.

Do I need vaccines?

Not required but recommended: hepatitis, typhoid, tetanus, etc. Ask your doctor.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes. It’s strongly recommended and often required.

What is the currency?

Vietnam Dong (VND). USD/EUR accepted in some places. ATMs widely available.
